Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of reducing the dietary crude protein and the addition of valine on performance, body chemical composition (BCC) and composition of the weight gain (CWG) in piglets during the first two weeks postweaning. Three diets were compared: 1) high crude protein with antibiotic (APCa, 24%), 2) low protein diet without antibiotic (LCP, 18%) and 3) low protein diet with valine (Val) (LCPv, 18%). In experiment one was carried out a performance test;108 piglets were used. Were determined the presence and severity of diarrhea and studied the zootechnical performance of piglets, by measuring the daily body weight gain (DBWG), feed intake (FI) and feed efficiency (FE). In experiment two the BCC of piglets and the CWG were studied during the two first weeks postweaning. 53 piglets were used, five were the initial group (IG), slaughtered the day of weaning; the rest stayed in 12 pens to be assigned to the three diets. Day 14 postweaning, 15 piglets was slaughtered (five per diet) that formed the experimental group (EG). Estimated empty weight gain of piglets from the EG and the CWG during the first two weeks postweaning using the method of comparative sacrifice. Of the slaughtered animals were collected viscera and blood and carcass. The BCC was measured to determine the percentage and water gain, dry matter (DM), fat (EE), crude protein (CP), ash and energy of viscera and blood and carcass. In experiment one, piglets fed diet HCPa had greater DBWG with respect to the fed to LCP and LCPv (P = 0.05); the FI was not different between treatments during the first week post-weaning although there was a trend (P=0.09) that in animals fed with diets LCP and LCPv outside lower in relation to the de the HCPa. During the second week postweaning piglets fed diet HCPa had greater FI (P=0.05); all the animals consumed more food during the second week with respect to the first. The FI was greater in piglets fed diet HCPa (P¿0.05). In the first week postweaning, animals fed with LCP and LCPv tended to have lower FE regarding the HCPa (P = 0.06). The FE had no differences between treatments. There were no significant differences in incidence and severity of diarrhea among treatments (P¿0.05). Only, both variables were higher during the second week postweaning. In experiment two, there was not effect of dietary crude protein level or the inclusion of Val on the yield and chemical composition of viscera and blood and carcass (P¿0.05) on the variables analyzed. The gain of EE had a tendency (P=0.09) to be higher for piglets fed with LCPv. In the CWG in the carcass, all animals had MS loss due to loss of EE, confirmed in the loss of energy. In conclusion, the effect of reducing the dietary crude protein and the addition of valine to a diet low in protein, they did not influence on performance, CQC, CWG and on the incidence and severity of diarrhea of weaned piglets during the two weeks postweaning.
