Any activity inside the buildings on inappropriate weather conditions, originate a decline in the performance of work, loss of concentration and an increase in the number of errors. Most of the educational buildings in Querétaro, do not have efficient thermal insulation, or protection of vegetation, such poorly insulated roofs absorb and transmit a considerable amount of heat for the underlying interior spaces. There are buildings that have heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to generate the interior comfort; however, this represents high consumptions of electric energy, pollution, and monetary costs; it is therefore required to generate sustainability in generation of interior thermal comfort systems. The objective of this work is to develop and characterize a substrate of green roofs to generate thermal comfort inside public buildings through the proportions of the mixture of materials and variations in the thickness of the treatment. The study area was conducted in the H building of graduate school of the Faculty of engineering of the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro; for this comparative study is taken as reference only four classrooms, by being structurally identical which have an area of 48 square meters respectively. Is considered a traditional roof, a green roof extensive 10 cm thick and two intensive green roofs of 15 and 25 cm thick, was placed a system of irrigation sprinkler and vegetation was placed on the upper part, Aptenia was chosen for this study cordifolia the substrate used is a composite of clay with organic matter and sand pumice in the proportions of 60% and 40% respectively, which was developed and characterized with simple laboratory tests. The results showed that through the characterization of green roofs was reached the comfort ranges set by the norm in terms of temperature and relative humidity at the interior of the building, being the intensive green roof with 15 cm the optimum thickness, since presents a better internal thermal behaviour.
