In Mexico, land freight transport is critical to the national productive sector; it is done mainly by road and by rail to a lesser extent. The truck dominance over the railway for most of the twentieth century has been reduced in the first decade of the new century, largely by deregulation of trucking in the early 1990s and the privatization of the railways in 1997. In the current modal split however the motor carrier still has the most, despite its technical and environmental efficiency is lower than that of the railroad. This work proposes to model the road freight as a bimodal network with a road and another part connected by rail transfer terminals. It is posed the problem of finding the distribution of freight flows in the bimodal network so that the operation for each mode of transport be of minimal cost, while the cargo movement demands are met. The mathematical basis is the problem of the shortest route, which extends to the case when the network has many users and congestion arises lengthening the travel time. Using the principles of Wardrop and their optimization criteria, the needed elements for the flow allocation model are posed, using the TransCAD software specialized in transportation planning, considering four scenarios to contrast results. The modeling results show that the railroad is indeed more efficient in both cost and environmental considerations. In terms of travel time, road transport is more efficient. The traffic assignment obtained in the modeling suggests that the current land transport sector has opportunities in various fields to encourage more balanced movement and fewer undesirable impacts land cargo.es_ES
