Mathematical morphology has been used in a wide gamut of applications in different branches of science. In this thesis we cover segmentation by watershed. This is a powerful tool for the segmentation of images, and since its appearance more than 30 years ago, it is still of interest to many researchers today. In this work we present the appropriate use of morphological operators for the segmentation of images with the aid of watershed, as well as the use of granulometry, a tool used chiefly to determine the distribution of sizes, establishing segmentation criteria, size criteria and orientation. We analyze biometric images such as fingerprints, as well as materials metallography as the perlitic phase in which structures were characterized by size and orientation by means of what we call directional morphology; using this methodology segmentation was carried out as directional structures. Two concepts are set forth: the line segment function and the orientation function. These two functions provide all the information on the structures contained in the image; combined with the watershed, a good segmentation was obtained. Another contribution of this work was to propose the analysis of nodular cast iron with morphological transformations. Two characteristics were analyzed on this microstructure: nodularity and the spatial distribution between nodules. Nodularity used a variant of the morphological skeleton which permitted segmentation of nodular particles of the non-nodular without having to use form indexes. The proposed methodology was compared with methods recently proposed, as well as with a manual counting method based on the ISO 945 standard. The spatial distribution of the nodules allowed us to establish the similitude of nodule behavior within the ferritic matrix. In addition, the compacity curve was proposed; it was thus possible to completely characterize the microstructure of nodular cast iron.
