In developing countries, little percentage of the wastewater generated is treated, so for this reason it is a necessity to install adequate and sustainable treatment plants. In this regard, the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor stands out as an option technically reliable and economically viable in the treatment of wastewater. In addition, inside the bioreactors, supports of different materials are used to favor the growth of the microorganisms that are fixed to these supports, producing higher quality effluents. On the other hand, aerobic treatment plants generate sludges containing a large number of pathogens, high chemical and biochemical oxygen demand (COD and BOD5 respectively). This sludge has been treated by anaerobic systems such as the UASB reactor. According to the above, it was decided to evaluate a reactor type UASB of 140L for the treatment of domestic wastewater and aerobic sludge. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) columns were placed inside and to improve the quality of the effluent, filters of granular activated carbon and cellulose fiber were placed in the exterior. At the start up of the system, 40 L of sludge were inoculated, adding domestic wastewater and placing it in the open at room temperature (RT). After stabilization of the system (3-6 months), the volumes of 3, 5 and 7 L of residual water per day were evaluated, with hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 47, 28 and 20 days respectively. Additionally, the biofilm fixation was verified by Scanning Electron Microscopy. The percentages of reduction of BOD5, COD, SST, fecal coliforms and fats and oils were obtained for the 3 effluents. For 3 L were obtained: 90%, 66%, 90%, 99.9% and 9%. For 5 L: 93%, 71%, 90%, 99.9% and 0%. And finally for 7 L: 80%, 65%, 91%, 99.9% and 64%. With respect to the treatment of aerobic sludge, the percentages of reduction of BOD5, COD and fecal coliforms obtained were: 43%, 44% and 2 Log (or 99.2%) respectively.
