Objective: An accurate diagnosis in orthodontics is fundamental to determine the pattern and objectives of orthodontic treatment, and the Pont index is a study commonly used to determine the transversal width of the arches, which is highly controversial since this index is based on a French population, therefore, our objective is to determine the viability of the clinical application of the Pont Index to a population with ideal occlusion found in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Querétaro.Methodology: Across-sectional, descriptive and comparative studywas carried out. We reviewed 320 students from the School of Dentistry of the Autonomous University of Querétaro of which only 65 individuals met the inclusion criteria: Mexican individuals between 18 and25 years of age with ideal occlusion and without previous treatment of orthodontics or orthopedics. The measurements were taken directly in the plaster models with the help of a compass of fine tips to measure the mesiodistal width of the four upper incisors and the Korkhaus compass to measure the transversal width of the arches, to later make a comparison with the widths suggested by the formula of Pont. Results: The statistical analysis showed that there is a statistically significant difference between the Pont indexes and the measurements obtained in the models. Therefore, the Pont Index is not applicable for subjects with the characteristics of this study, as well as the modifications made by Korkhaus and Linder-Hart. However, the modification made by Linder-Hart to the Pont Index are the values that are closest to the measurements obtained in the study models obtained. Conclusions: According to the results of this study, there was no conclusive evidence to suggest that the Pont Index, the modification made by Korkhaus and the one made by Linder-Hart, could be used reliably to predict the ideal values of the width of the archin Mexican individuals.
