This research was carried out in the Amazcala campus of the faculty of Natural Sciences, of the Autonomous University of Querétaro, located in the municipality of Marqués, Querétaro. The objective was to determine the effect of nutritional stress on post-service luteal function in goats that were induced to ovulate during the seasonal anoestrus. A total of 35 Nubian females (NB = 18) and Alpina (AP = 17) were used, distributed in two experimental groups: nutritional stress (EN) and Control (CT), with an initial weight of (EN: 38.91 ± 6.29 Kg.) Vs. (CT: 36.95 ± 7.46 Kg.); and a body mass index (BMI) of (EN: 9.25) Vs. (CT: 8.89). In the EN group (n = 18), nutritional stress was induced between 2 days pre- and 30 days post-service by a 50 % reduction in the daily amount of feed offered considering the individual voluntary consumption of an integral diet. The CT group (n = 17) remained without restriction. The estrus was induced by CIDR® intravaginal devices, which were removed 10 days after insertion, applying at the same time 250 U.I. of eCG i.m. (Folligon) and 7 mg of PF2α (Lutalyse); 48 hr after removal of the device the goats were served by fertile males through controlled mounts assuring 2 services per female with the same animal. Pregnancy diagnosis was made at 30 and 45 days post-service through transrectal ultrasonography, obtaining 55.6% and 94.1% of pregnancy rate for EN and CT respectively (p <0.05); in a similar way treatment influenced final body mass index (IMCF: 7.85 Vs 9.02) and final body weight (PF: 38.84 Vs 43.37 kg). Luteal function was characterized through RIA determination of plasma progesterone concentrations in blood samples collected during 30 days post-service, every day for the first 10 days and every 3 days thereafter; from these we estimated the percentage of goats that ovulated, minimum (Min), mean (Med) and maximum (Max) concentrations of P4, time of onset of the luteal phases (TIFL), and incidence of short luteal phases (FLC) in non-pregnant goats. The statistical analysis was by means of ANDEVA for a completely randomized design considering iv the effects of group (GPO), race (RZA), diagnosis of gestation (DXG) and double interactions. Pregnancy rate was evaluated trough logistic regression and for FLC a descriptive analysis was performed. According to the serum concentrations of P4 it was determined that 94.3% of the experimental units presented ovulation associated with induced estrus. Plasma progesterone was atypical in the unique non-pregnant goat of the EN group and in another non-pregnant CT goat, thus characterization of their luteal phase was not possible. Because of it, the GPO x DXG interaction could not be tested in the ANDEVAS for the P4 variables. Med concentration of P4 was higher in females that became pregnant compared to empty females (1.51 vs 1.04 ng / mL respectively; P=0.03). Min and Med concentrations of P4 were not influenced by GPO, RZA y GPO x RZA, however, Max values of P4 tended to be higher in the AP breed compared to the NB (2.57 vs. 1.94 ng / mL, respectively; P = 0.06) as well as the pregnancy rate (88.2 vs 61.1%, P = 0.06). Regarding TIFL, non-pregnant goats delayed this initiation as compared to pregnant goats (5.71 vs. 3.86 days, P=0.07). The incidence of short luteal phases according to the total of non-pregnant experimental units was 11.1%. It is concluded that in goats induced to ovulate during the anestrus season, nutritional stress due to restriction in feed consumption during the early post-service period severely affects pregnancy rate; most likely due to a luteal dysfunction represented by a delay in the onset of the luteal phase.
