This work was done to test the efficiency of combinations of high temperature (HT) and controlled atmosphere (CA) to kill immature fruit flies. Combinations of HT and CA were applied for minimal exposure times as a quarantine control system to kill eggs and larvae of the fruit flies Anastrophe obliqua (Macquart) and A. ludens (L) in 'Manila' mango fruit. In vitro tests with 48-h eggs and 3rd_instars, and in vivo tests with infested and physiologically mature fruits, were performed to evaluate the following treatment: HT of 44 ºC for 160 min; HT of 44ºC for 120 min and CA of 14.8% 0 2 + 7.2 % C02 and 15.1% 02 + 20.6% C02. Other in vitro tests included HT of 44ºC for 160 min and CA of 0% 0 2, 13% 02 + 20% C02 and 0% 02 + 50% C02; HT of 48ºC for 220 min and HT of 50, 51, 52, 54 and 55ºC for 240 min alone and combined with CA of 0% 0 2 + 50% C02. HT of 40ºC for 240 min and at 48 and 55ºC for 80, 160, and 240 min and combined CA of 0% 02 + 50% C02 was also evaluated. Fruits artificially infested (in vivo tests) were exposed to a CA of 0% 02 + 50% C02 at 35, 37, 39, 40, and 42-49ºC. Fruits naturally infested with first instars were exposed to a CA of 0% 0 2 + 50% C02 at HT of 37, 39, 40, and 42-15ºC. Fruits naturally infested with 48-h eggs were exposed to HT of 43ºC for 160 min and the same CA at HT of 39, 40, 42 and 43ºC for 160 min.The response variable was the total and corrected mortality, analyzed by ANOVA and PROBIT 9. An experiment was performed to determine the effect of CA on fruit quality where physiologically mature Manila mango fruits free of fruit flies were exposed to a CA of 0% 0 2 + 50% C02 at HT of 40, 42-49ºC for 160 min and stored for 1 O and 20 days at 1 OºC. Fruits were then assessed for scald damage, fruit weight lost, fruit firmness, and externa! And interna! color. The CAs combined with HT demonstrated high potential to ~11 eggs and larvae of A. obliqua and A. ludens. In the in vitro tests, a CA of 0% 0 2 + 50% C02 at 44ºC for 160 min caused the higher mortality of eggs and larvae of both species as did a CA of 0% 02 on larvae of A. lude ns. The egg stage was less susceptible than the larval stage in both species. The estimated PROBIT 9 for the egg stage was 61 ºC. In the in vivo tests, a CA of0% 02 + 50% C02 at HT of ~3 9°C caused 100% mortality of 3 rd. instars, and the same eff ect was o bserved at HT of ~40ºC on 1 st instars. A HT of 43ºC caused 100% mortality of eggs of both species. Fruits exposed to the CA at HT of 40, 42 and 43ºC were statistically of the same quality as those at the control (room temperature), except at 43ºC they had higher pulp firmness. Fruits treated at HT of ~44ºC revealed scald damage. It was concluded that a combination of CA of 0% 0 2 + 50% C02 at HT of >40ºC for 160 min caused 100% mortality of egg and larval stages of both Anastrepha obliqua and Anastrepha ludens in Manila mango fruits. A CA of 0% 0 2 + 50% C02 at HT of 40-43ºC for 160 min can be used as a quarantine control system against both A. obliqua and A. ludens in Manila mango fruits without fruit. Quality detriment.
