The objective of this study is the history of Santa Catarina throughout time and a description of its last muleteers between 1930 and 1950. The history of Santa Catarina is analyzed from a long term perspective beginning with the first settlers whose activities were hunting and gathering. From this perspective the history and social life which defined what was later to be known as the Pame culture is set forth. After, a general review of the characteristics of colonial society and its impact on Santa Catarina is carried out. An account of the importance of the environment on the establishment of settlers in this place is given. Daily life is shown to play a part in the defining of the settlers¿ character. Keeping in mind major national events, the history of Santa Catarina is presented as part of the process of change the nation experienced after independence and the consolidation of the State throughout the 19th Century. To understand the region-country relationship, the course followed by Santa Catarina in the heat of revolutionary events and their aftermath is considered. Thus, in a sui generis context and historical setting, the muleteers make their appearance. These muleteers had for years economically and socially connected the population with others that were part of the regional commercial routes. The overview of these historic individuals permeates the vision of Santa Catarina¿s history. Their travels, routes, information and daily lives give regional meaning to this type of experience which thus makes up a part of the great conglomerate of the place and in turn relates to the state, the country and the world. This study is a contribution to local history, a segment of the regional history that can be projected onto the great processes of the past. The muleteers were a clear example of the strength and option for survival in Santa Catarina which has a semi-arid geography that conditioned the lives of its inhabitants in each and every moment of its historical periods. The lack of food production, employment and money forced its inhabitants to seek them beyond their own territory.
