The present research aims to study the family life of African origin people who came to work at the mining industry after the foundation of the town of San Luis Minas del Potosí in 1592. This study is specifically focused on two problems: the towns settlements and the possibilities of different qualities and conditions inhabitants to establish a family relationship throughout the study of marriage. The settlement analysis focused the development of mining industry as its main axis; therefore, the slave manpower played a significant role among other economic activities that allowed this settlement. As a result of the mining extraction industry, several groups from the center and southern New Spain arrived to San Luis Potosi, in addition to the slaves brought to the New World for this specific purpose. This research also highlights the jobs held by black and mulatto people, especially those free from slavery, as they were the ones with greater ease and freedom to raise families, preferably under the Christian family model, as it was driven by evangelism since the arrival of the Spaniards and that particularly focused its thrust with the Third Provincial Council of 1585. The coexistence between black and mulatto slaves with members of other social groups was also studied and analyzed through the features of mixed marriages as well as how they integrated into family types that differed from the Christian model. However, throughout the research it is revealed that the Christian model that was tried to be imposed faced itself with an adverse reality; therefore we find that talking about a model, particularly that of a family of African origin people in the town of San Luis Minas del Potosi in the first half of the seventeenth century, is impossible due to the many ways in which they interacted maritally and familiarly, specially where the matrifocal family predominated against the patrifocal family, not only among themselves but among other social groups who they coexisted with .es_ES
