Electromyography is a test that measures the response to nerve stimulation of the muscle, ie measured the electrical activity in the muscle fiber through thin electrodes inserted through the skin into the muscle; The use of this test in the history cline helps prevent possible temporomandibular joint dysfunction and improved muscle tone with the use of functional braces. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the changes in electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporal muscles in patients with deep overbite treated by using equiplan. The study was conducted in children aged 7 to 12 who were presented at the Clinical Graduate Orthodontics Autonomous University of Queretaro in the period June 2014 to August 2015. Methodology: Three records electromyographic activity of the muscles were made masseter and temporal right and left respectively, the first record was done by placing a tongue depressor in interproximal for the base of each patient record, the second record was performed immediately after placing the functional brace. The apparatus of functional jaw orthopedics indicated to relieve overbite using, in all patients as an aid equiplan for deep overbite correction was made. After two months of use of functional brace the third record of the electromyographic activity of both right and left muscles was performed. Results: changes were observed in the reduction of electromyographic activity in the masseter muscle and temporal right and left with improvement in muscle tone. Conclusions: changes were observed in all patients. With the use of functional braces with equiplan they achieve favorable changes in muscle tone helping to avoid possible temporomandibular joint dysfunction. The study shows that there may be favorable changes in only 2 months of treatment in individuals who properly use the functional brace jaws.
