(Mayer, 1969).
Narrative is a tool that has been used in several studies to analyze different aspects of language because it provides information about language acquisition and development, mainly because it involves the use of linguistic, cognitive, and socio-affective abilities a child has (Bamberg and Reilly, 1996; Reilly, Losh, Bellugi, and Wulfeck, 2004). Losh, Bellugi, Reilly and Anderson (2000) found that narrative analysis provides information about both typical and atypical children. Reilly (1992) has also found that children use different resources to convey evaluations in their narratives: they use mental states to convey emotions, frames of mind and mental verbs. Unfortunately, there are not enough studies about Spanish speaking children and not even children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) that provide information about mental states used to express emotions. This is the reason this study aims to give information about the linguistic resources this population uses to convey emotion through the use of mental states. There are two studies conveyed in this research, the first study aims to give an account of the linguistic resources children with SLI use to express emotion and to find out if they do it the same way typically developing children (TD) do. The participants are seven children with SLI and six with TD between six and nine years old. Narratives were elicited from the wordless book Frog, where are you? (Mayer, 1969). Narratives were videotaped, transcribed and analyzed to analyze the mental states used to convey emotion. Results show there is a difference between the types and tokens used to express emotion by children with SLI and with TD. However, due to population size it is not possible to make generalizations about this atypical population. The aim of the second study was to find out if there was an effect on the story type related to the type and tokens of the linguistic resources used to express emotion. Unfortunately, it was not possible to include the participants of the first study, and the participants are only three children with TD from six to nine years old.es_ES
