Fatigue in bridges is of special interest in Mexico because the bridges inventory is nearly 40 years old in average and nowadays there are much more and heavier vehicles than those considered when those structures were designed. Since 1999, prestressed concrete is used in near 70 percent of the bridges built in our country, and each day, the use of this material is more important in the Mexican infrastructure. Hence, a methodological model is proposed to evaluate the evolution of deterioration of a prestressed concrete bridge under different service conditions and initial cracking extensions at the center of the most stressed beam. Thereby, it is possible to prognosticate the deterioration of these structures and establish preventive actions or plan conservation strategies to increase its useful life. To represent real operation conditions, loading scenarios were simulated through Monte Carlo Method based on the load and traffic statistical distributions of Mexican highways. Those loads were amplified by an impact factor due to the surface road condition and were applied to a finite element model, which is representative to most bridges in Mexico, to calculate the maximum stresses in the beam of interest, considering different initial cracking scenarios and its possible growth. Finally, the influence of cracking size and traffic was correlated the stress and deterioration in the prestress steel, which is the most leading damage and most probable cause of damage for the beam. It was observed that fatigue in these structures requires very specific conditions to be determinant in its useful life, although it can be susceptible to cracking because of the presence of initial defects and to initiate other deterioration mechanisms in the prestressing steel, which in addition to fatigue, can lead the structural element to critical conditions.
