This research examines two types of preschool teaching situations that deal with Decimal Numeral System (DNS), through money and the activities of buying and selling. One type of situations corresponds with the textbook lessons, the other one is the implementation of activities of buying and selling in the school ("The Little Store"). Both types of teaching situations are analyzed considering the following aspects: a) the nature of the mathematical knowledge involved; b) the possible procedures that students could try, their mistakes and difficulties; c) the notions of money involved in the buying and selling context and their potential impact on the procedures of the students. The criteria to analyze such aspects are based on three theoretical and methodological sources: studies on processes of construction of the concept of number and DNS in children; research on psychogenetic development of the concept of money, buying and selling; and some elements of the Theory of Didactic Situations about the educational conditions where a mathematical problem occurs. There are also presented the results of interviews with 10 preschool students to verify their knowledge and assumptions about these aspects: number, the DNS, the money and the sale. In this thesis the results obtained confirm the ideas of previous studies it is not pertinent to introduce the DNS formal study in preschool; however, it is possible to approximate students to the DNS through the production and testing of hypotheses about the regularities that govern the system. The money and the activities of buying and selling can be used as a context to understand some of those regularities, but it is necessary to consider the previous knowledge and experiences of pupils on the same context. It is recognized that many of the difficulties faced when working with the studied didactic situations, were caused by insufficient didactic analysis during the design and the implementation of the activities.
