The analysis of the cognitive processes involved in meaning construction is allowed by the study of the comprehension of the non-literal language in children. In this thesis the interpretations of the participants from different metaphorical riddles are examined, particularly trying to find how children establish coherence and integration of the properties from metaphors and if these are assimilated by the participants differently depending on different moments of the cognitive development considering the type of the conceptual relations and the coherence level reached by the participants. This thesis is also interested in analyzing if the type of task proposed affects the interpretations of the children when they¿re solving metaphorical riddles. The participants of this investigation were thirty students from a federal elementary school with afternoon schedule from Querétaro, Mexico. Ten of the students were from second grade, ten from fourth and ten from sixth grade respectively. They were asked to respond to four metaphorical riddles in two different tasks, the first of them was spontaneous (no options) and the second one was with the support of three different response options. The results show that the participants from superior grades tend to construct more balanced conceptual relations taking into account all the clues from the riddles with more frequency than the students from lower grades, on the other side, the data shows that the task with options promotes more integrative responses than the task with no options. A comparative analysis with a private school was made, from which it is possible to affirm that certain similarities prevail such as the patterns in the evolution of the responses depending on the school grade and the given task.
