This research offers a study of teaching practices utilised by teachers of indigenous languages who teach students who have decided voluntarily to learn in Queretaro City in Mexico. For this study a qualitative method in combination with the ethnographic method was used. The techniques used were observations inside the classroom as well as loosely structured interviews with the teachers. Three instruments were designed for data gathering and three support instruments to analyse this data. In this study several aspects were analysed, the main ones being teaching methods, teaching materials, encouraged linguistic abilities and the pedagogical trends of these teachers. In addition, a register was made of existing independent teachers of indigenous languages, working at the time of the investigation. Regarding teaching methods utilized it was found that for the most part, teachers use the Grammar-Translation method, and to a lesser degree, the Natural method in their teaching practice. As far as teaching materials are concerned, usage is minimal and rudimentary. In the case of teaching resources, it was found to be non-existent. Findings related to linguistic skills promoted during the language class were mainly centred on the development of oral and written expression, leaving reading and listening comprehension completely relegated. Pedagogical trends of these teachers turn out to be mostly tradicional, combined, sometimes to a lesser degree, with the espontaneista trend. Lastly, owing to the questionable intercultural values demonstrated by some teachers, the intercultural relation between them and certain students in the classroom becomes soured. The results of this study show a collection of important information necessary for future research, as well as for any proposal aimed at teaching improvements.
