"In recent years, sociocultural factors related to food have been explored, linked to the social environment. The maternal perception of the body image of their child and the value of child’s feeding as the basis of the child’s wealth, are some of these factors that can condition children's food consumption. The objective of the study was to associate the maternal perception of the body image of their school-age child and the value of child’s feeding as the basis of the child’s wealth with child's food consumption. Materials and methods: Cross- sectional, descriptive study developed in schools with diverse socioeconomic level of Querétaro city. 322 mothers were questioned about feeding issues and body image perception and anthropometric measures (weight, height, waist circumference) were taken to mothers and children. Results: Mothers mean age was 36 ± 6 years and children was 9 ± 1 years. It was observed that children who were overweight or obese, their weight was underestimated by 46.3% and 85.7% of their mothers, respectively. Regarding the diet, it was found that mothers who had higher score on the children’s feeding value scale, reported that their children had higher consumption of foods with high energy density, of which the greatest contribution were carbohydrates found in sugars and legumes; whereas this association was not observed with the perception of body image. Conclusion: Mothers tend to provide their children foods with high energy density, mainly food with high carbohydrate content, as they present higher value of their children's feeding. The perception of a lower weight of the child was not associated with the child food consumption. It is necessary to consider the interaction with other sociocultural variables associated to feeding habits and apply similar design in different regions of Mexico, which will allow to understand the feeding patterns in the child population, being a key point to prevent the risk of multicausal diseases."
