dc.description"Food insecurity (FI) is related to the probability of a decrease in access to food or consumption levels. Having a restriction on food suggests a lower consumption nutrients, which could affect cognitive development, especially in children. The objective of the study was to evaluate the relationship between IA and cognitive function in school children in Querétaro. A total of 153 children from 6 to 10 years of public elementary schools in the municipality of Querétaro participated in a cross-sectional study. Household FI was measured using a questionnaire based on the Latin American and Caribbean Food Security Scale and a validated questionnaire to measure FI of the mother during her infancy. Anthropometric measurements (weight, height, waist circumference) were taken by standardized personnel and the WISC IV scale adapted to children for the determination of cognitive function was applied. Statistical ANOVA tests were used to determine mean difference and a simple linear regression to assess the risk of impaired cognitive function related to FI. The children had a prevalence of overweight or obesity of 39.9%, indicating that almost 40% of the population had a weight above the normal for their age. A total of 54.3% of the households had FI and 80.4% of the mothers suffered FI in their infancy. A total of 52.3% of the children had average scores in the Total Intelligence Quotient (TIQ). There was a difference in the means of the IQQ scores between children with SA and FI, both, at home and during their mother’s childhood, children who had SA had higher CIT scores than those who lived with IA. However, when adjusting for maternal education the relationship disappears. In conclusion, in the present study, the IA at home and IA during the mothers’ childhood was not related to the cognitive function."es_ES
