Using APOS (Actions, Process, Objects and Schemes) theory, developed by Dr. Ed Dubinsky and his collaborators based on the constructivist ideas proposed by Piaget, as a theoretical and methodological framework, the present research paper exposes the design and validation of four genetic decompositions as part of a project to develop a didactic proposal for the teaching and evaluating of algebra at high school (students between 15 and 18 years old) level in Mexico. The paper focuses on linear equation systems and their solution sets. The first part of the methodology consists on a theoretical analysis of four algebraic methods for solving linear equation systems: Cramer’s rule, elimination method, substitution method and equalization method. This theoretical analysis leads to the design of four hypothetical genetic decompositions, where the path that students are expected to follow in order to construct the concepts of single solution, empty solution and infinite solutions is described. Subsequently, within the methodology two phases are described;the design of a series of questionnaires whose objective is to validate what is proposed in the genetic decompositions, and finally, the process of applications of said questionnaires and the analysis of the collected data. The questionnaires where applied to a group of students on the third semester of a high school that belongs to the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro. By analyzing the data collected from the questionnaires two interesting conclusions can be found. The first one is about the deficienciesthat student present in terms of prior knowledge, and the second one is that, it is necessary to work with the algebraic and the geometrical interpretations at the same time, in order to make it easier for students to learn the concepts of interest of this work
