In Mexico, the study of agroforestry systems, especially Living Fences (LF) should be approached as a strategy of functional restoration in the landscape. In the municipality of Querétaro, the Buenavista watershed houses LF systems which are in danger of disappearing; given this situation, it is important to study these systems in order to see their role in the functioning of the territory. The objective of this research is to identify the spatial distribution and composition of species of these systems by functional area of the watershed; design and establish new barriers using native and fruit species to evaluate the feasibility of using these systems in restoration. The identification of the LF used the Normalized Vegetation Index; the Functional Zones (FZ) of the watershed were calculated; field trips were conducted to identify the structure and composition of the barriers by FZ. To evaluate them as a restoration strategy, LF was designed and implemented in agricultural lands monitoring survival, growth and sightings of diverse fauna, and changes in soil conditions were compared. As results, it was found that these systems cover 8.99% of the agricultural area of the total of 6,215.06 ha that make up the lanfscape, being located on property boundaries, on the edges of terraces, on roadsides and and in riverine areas, predominating in the low FZ where the farming. It was found that the LF are remnants of natural vegetation, and in low FZ these systems are induced. It was found that these systems have low survival (31.14%); the most suitable species were Eysenhardtia polystachya, Erythrina coralloides and Punica granatum. The newly established LF act as habitat for insects. Changes in soil conditions between the BV and the agricultural soil showed that the Vertisol and Kastañozem 2 soils, the living barriers, favor the improvement of the edaphic conditions, in contrast to the Kastañozem 1 soil where the agricultural sites have better edaphic conditions. It is concluded that LF can play an important role in the functioning of the watershed by mitigating erosive processes and stabilizing land, offering a habitat for fauna and improving soil conditions.
