Asphalt is a material widely used in the construction of flexible pavement roads. At the global level, the modification of asphalts with polymers has allowed us to obtain materials that meet the characteristics that asphalt by itself would not resist. This work presents the effect of the modification of neat asphalt, with the styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) and ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA) modifier co-polymers; on its chemical, morphological, thermal, mechanical and rheological characteristics in order to identify different levels of modification as well as the determination of the type and quantity of polymer modifier. In order to obtain a characterization reference, the SBS polymer was added in percentages of 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 10, 11 and 12% according to the behavior observed in previous studies, as well as EVA polymer in percentages 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 13, 23 and 25%. The asphalt was characterized pure and modified by Infrared Spectroscopy, changes in morphology were analyzed by Transmission Electronic Microscopy (TEM); the thermal characteristics were analyzed by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), penetration and stress-strain tests were carried out and the rheology of the asphalts was analyzed with the aid of the Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) and the Brookfield rotational viscometer. The results of the Spectroscopy showed that the modified asphalts retain the functional groups of the asphalt and demonstrate the presence of the functional groups of the modifying polymers. The results obtained by TEM allowed identifying different phases in the crude asphalt and its variation with the addition of the modifying polymers, evidencing considerable structural changes that led to changes in the characteristics and properties of the material at the macro level. The results obtained by DSC allowed identifying three glassy transition temperatures (Tg) in the crude asphalt that are related to its fundamental components. The mixtures with SBS and EVA altered these Tg evidencing the modification of the thermal characteristics of the crude asphalt. The mixtures with SBS had a more pronounced effect on the mechanical properties, achieving a considerable reduction in penetration and an increase in the elastic modulus with respect to unmodified asphalt. With respect to the rheological properties, a better behavior is shown in the modified asphalts. Finally, a methodology for the identification of the type and quantity of the polymer is proposed, where techniques such as Infrared Spectroscopy and TEM are presented as simple to perform at the laboratory level, hoping that a future will be within the reach of asphalt plants.
